We literally haven’t taken family photos since our 12-year-old son was one. I know, shame on us! Since I already wanted to take maternity photos, we took advantage of that time to capture pictures of the entire family.
I instantly knew I wanted to take photos outdoors. Everyone thought I was crazy because we live in NYC and it’s the dead of winter! But that day turned out to be beautiful! It was sunny, with a high of 45 degrees. For a native New Yorker like myself, it felt like springtime. We decided to shoot in the DUMBO section of Brooklyn. The cobble streets, brick walls and Manhattan skyline was gorgeous.
The hardest thing about the photoshoot was deciding what to wear! We wanted to look good, but we also wanted to be warm and comfortable. The lumberjack shirts my guys wore were perfect for layering - not to mention they were only $20 at Old Navy. Their fitted Brooklyn caps and jeans added a little edge to our photos and tied in with the scenery perfectly. If I wore red, it would’ve been overkill, so I decided to go with a neutral sweater dress and a red lip to tie it all together.
Our photographer was amazing. He was very patient and made us feel comfortable the entire time. He made us feel like we had creative control and directed us amateurs as needed.
Overall, we enjoyed the experience. Outside of some portraits at Sears, this was our first real photoshoot. The three hours we spent posing and laughing was well worth it. We walked away with memories to keep for a lifetime and hundreds of photos to cherish.
